yes! yes! it seems your search is for a professional position. absolutely get on LinkedIn. most employers check that site in fact i know of friends who include the link to their LinkedIn in their resume under their contact information.

you can connect with current/former colleagues and any professional connections. ASK for endorsements (surely there are others you know on LinkedIn)

It doesh't help at all but it can hurt your chances. It's fine for networking but it's irrelevant when you are being intereviewed.

I respectfully disagree. I have found that many employers do look at LinkedIn to fine tune who they send job opening adverts to. I have had many recruiters ask to link up with me and I always accept them even if I am not currently looking for a position. I have received many notifications of job openings from my LinkedIn site. Although it might not help you in the interview process itself, it is another avenue to put yourself out there to promote your skills. Keep all your online and social media sites professional and never put anything out there you wouldn't want an employer to see if you are looking to promote yourself.
