@On It    That's why the government bought it and it now belongs to the American people.  That whole area is undermined with thermal features.  The "caldera" is so called because it's a collapsed volcano.  You need to explore that area sometime.  I'm so glad they sold the land as a National preserve and not for condos or some nonsense.  You can now tramp through all 93,000 acres, ride your horse there, cross country ski, fly fish but no camping.

@Kachina624 We need to plan to head up there. My husband talks about how beautiful the area is. I have been to Los Alamos and Bandolier on my son's class field trip, but that was many, many years ago. (I was freaked out by the plague warnings at the entrance to Bandolier.)

New Mexico is truly the Land of Enchantment.

I bet many people don't realize they've existed in the US.  They're quite large, up to 660lbs, and are strictly carnivores but are not known to prey on people.  Very solitary, they just meet to breed.  There's plenty in the Southern deserts for them to eat.

Beautiful and magnificent creatures......

They used to be in Texas and Florida but became extinct long ago....

Texas still has Bobcats, Ocelots, and Cougars (also known as Pumas or Mountain Lions).

@Spurt    We have tons of bobcats right in Albuquerque.  They're always eating someone's chickens.  We also have pumas or mountain lions but they're illusive and not often seen.  Never heard of an ocelot in our area.

We've had sitings of mountain lions one at a popular hiking park, they closed the park for a few days to try to find it. Another one at a person's swimming pool

Jaguars are gorgeous animals. They will also go after small pets and other small animals. The border is wide open; they can definitely get back and forth across the border to breed. People have been doing it for almost two years. Will I get poofed for this?😬
