What I would do is, get a flood light (maybe off the garage) and direct the lamp his way to 'light him up'. And as soon as he comes out, turn it on. Every morning.
I would want him to be aware that your aware of him staring at your house.
No, there's nothing illegal about what he's doing as far as sitting there, but there's nothing illegal of you making it known to him that you know that he's doing it.
Purposefully directing a flood light from your property to illuminate
aka ‘light him up’ in his front yard? Wow. That’s infringing on his property.
And just mean-spirited.
Illegal? No, but the police might be called to redirect the lights.
And of course, the ill will among neighbors would be much, much
worse than him just sitting there.
I agree!
Mean-spirited. And completely unnecessary. He's not bothering anyone - He's just sitting there. It sounds like a great way to end up with a reputation as the crazy lady on the block. I'm sure if the police were called, they would tell her that he's not doing anything wrong. Because he's not. He has every right to sit in front of his own house and look in any direction he wants. It's not as though he's peeping through windows. (Although the OP is doing exactly that to him!)
I also don't understand the posts that talk about "commiserating" with him because he's up early. Lots of people are morning people and love being out that early when most people are still asleep. My MIL was like that - She enjoyed the peace and quiet of the wee hours of the morning, and always woke super-early because it was her favorite time of day. She took her tea outside and sat there for long periods of time before getting on with her day. I'm sure someone might have thought she was looking at their house, but she was actually just collecting her thoughts and enjoying the quiet as the world around her came to life. It was her choice to be awake then, not anything that needed someone's empathy.

Yes, and not only is he not doing anything illegal, he's also not being disruptive. He's sitting in front of his own house, quietly. Not making noise, not bothering anyone, not hurting his dog, not yelling at his wife, not playing loud music. He's just sitting there, minding his own business and not bothering anyone. Sounds like a good neighbor to me!

If I sat out in the middle of the front yard at 4am, it wouldn't be long before Mr. Skunk came along and I'd be moving.

😄......you must live near me!
My husband leaves for work at 3:45 AM, he does a skunk sneak peak before heading to the car because he has seen them prowling around and is always afraid he's going to get "hit"!

Lol at the skunk comments! I usually walk down the driveway at around 6 am to pick up my paper, and I often note that a skunk has been around. Feeling much more relieved now that it's light out, at that time.
As for the OP.....I agree with those who said he perhaps needs to make early morning calls to people in other time zones, or maybe just gets a better cell phone signal in that part of his property. I wouldn't worry about it.

Ok, thank you for the replies. I am not going to worry about it or look out.
But to clarify; I wasn't being nosey I have "glanced" out my bedroom window every night before bed and in the morning for 11 years! That's how I noticed him to begin with is all And our drapes are all alwys closed except downstairs in the day, so I don't stare at people outside to clarify, just noticed him because I glanced out each morning and it was after 4 AM (and its dark out).
Also, (this has nothing to do with him) but before they moved in, our neighbors next door had their wheels taken off their car one night over night and had I looked out then (I actually heard car doors that night) I probably would have saw the perps)
So yeah I believe in being alert but I wont bother to look outside after 4 AM anymore. Let him sit on the slates on the grass till eternity. lol
As far as being friendly, I have waved to them when they first moved in, and others, when I first moved here (my husband lived here first), and no one is friendly, they turn their heads so I gave up.
The only people who ARE friendly are our new next door neighbors (young couple) and the couple that moved out last year were friendly too.
Of course we are older, so I am sure the younger couples here in our development with children probably hang out and talk. I don't know.
Ok thanks again, end of drama,,lol.. but I still want to get that ring door bell anyway becaise Im alone when DH is at work and people do come to the door trying to sell stuff and I never answer so having one of those RINGS would come in handy.

I could care less if my neighbor wants to get up early and look at my house. I am asleep enjoy the view hope he has a cup of coffee. Too be honest I really don't know my neighbors, they just pull into their garage and hardly see them. It's a quiet neighborhood and most of the kids are grown or in college I love it. My husband always gets up 5:30am makes coffee, goes into computer, reads the paper & 7:30am he walks an hour just the way he is but been retired for a year now. I said why?? You can sleep late enjoy but he says to me I like my alone time. That is not me but he always was an early riser even when he worked. He needs his alone time. LOL He enjoys it.

Wonder if he goes in the house and tells his wife about the odd woman peering out the windows so early in the morning? LOL

In what kind of weather is this happening? It sounds like it would be cold - is he bundled up or is he wearing PJs? In what position is he sitting on the pathway - is he crosslegged in a meditative position? Lounging?

This is an upscale country suburb can't get in for less then 300,000. Maybe some less. Why do you need chickens? go to Walmart get chicken and eggs
LOL
I figure this will be another passing phase in the adventure of raising kids, soon as they tire of the fascination should pass. Mama is the one who is doing all the work like I figured. Man is a cop , so, end of discussion.
It may be worth a call to check your city/county ordinances re: farm animals in a residential neighborhood.
In my area that's not allowed in residential neighborhoods, only rural county properties.
I live on the same island as Paual Deen and she had chickens/roosters but had to remove them, since it was against the ordinance here.
Of course every area has their own laws.
I pray for you that they don't get a rooster, but they probably will!
