Re: Is there a link between lead and so many diagnoses of mental illness ?

I think lead is a small factor. There are many reasons for increased violence. I think a major reason is a decline in the value one places on another's life

Link between lead poisoning and violent behavior?  Absolutely.  I've copied the very beginning of essay dealing with this topic.  You can use the info provided to google and read for yourselves if you have interest.  Unfortunately I think too many will sluff it off by saying - yeah there's a link - a lead pipe over the head.

Lead Exposure and Violent Crime in the Early Twentieth Century∗
James J. Feigenbaum and Christopher Muller
January 26, 2016

Abstract

In the second half of the nineteenth century, many American cities built water systems using lead or iron service pipes. Municipal water systems generated significant public health improvements, but these improvements may have been partially offset by the damaging effects of lead exposure through lead water pipes. We study the effect of cities’ use of lead pipes on homicide between 1921 and 1936. Lead water pipes exposed entire city populations to much higher doses of lead than have previously been studied in relation to crime. Our estimates suggest that cities’ use of lead service pipes considerably increased city-level homicide rates.

Wouldn't the second half of the 20th century been 1950s on?

So the rise in crime was noted between 1921 - 1936.

Not arguing, am I reading this wrong?

This particular article does reference the early to mid 1900's,  but you would need to read it in it's entirety to understand the correlation to today.

@bri20

Reports from the CDC and others come to the conclusion that, each year in America, more than 310,000 young children aged one to five years old have lead in their blood and can and are affected by serious medical issues.

Reports are on the previous page.  That's not a small number of children.

Lead paint and lead piping has always been talked about for as long as I can remember.  I know it's one of the things that must be disclosed on buying/selling a property.

What other things do they sneak lead into.  (Was it lead in toys from China?) I often hear about lipstick, but can't think of anything else that I've heard of.  Anyone?

Gasoline contained lead up to the late 1980;s I think.

Yes, you're right, toys from China were also found to have a lot of lead.  And those cheap bracelets little girls like to wear, especially when they came out of gumball machines.   It was common for little girls to put them in their mouth. Remember those?  Now that I think about it, I don't see them around anymore.

I just wonder if there may be a connection since so many people are diagnosed as mentally ill and the rise in gun violence and violent behavior.

Our water may not be safe and there are so many environmental pollutants and run offs from fertilizers and pesticides/herbicides that it just makes me wonder if this might be a factor.

1. There is no link between mental illness and violence. More mentally ill individuals are victims of crime rather than criminals.

2. Violent crimes, overall have fallen greatly from back in the 70s to the present time. It's easy to look up the statistics - and it's eye opening too!

3. Lead poisoning in children can lead to developmental disabilities, which is different than mental illness.

They're still around.  Junk jewelry for children and it's made in China, for the most part.

I do not believe there were more violent crime in the 70's than today.

When you lose some one you L~O~V~E, that Memory of them, becomes a TREASURE.
