Our water may not be safe and there are so many environmental pollutants and run offs from fertilizers and pesticides/herbicides that it just makes me wonder if this might be a factor.

1. There is no link between mental illness and violence. More mentally ill individuals are victims of crime rather than criminals.

2. Violent crimes, overall have fallen greatly from back in the 70s to the present time. It's easy to look up the statistics - and it's eye opening too!

3. Lead poisoning in children can lead to developmental disabilities, which is different than mental illness.

So then is there a link between developmental disabilities and violence.  If not, I'm missiing the connection between lead in the water and violence.

Please look it up. The statistics are very readily available.

I think the difference is that there is 24/7 news now - and violence attracts ratings.

Did the Columbine killers or Jeffrey Dahmer or the Menendez brothers drink bad water?

Wonder if the Isis killers and terrorists are drinking leaded water.

I agree poverty can be linked to violence but many poor people are law abiding citizens.

Let's blame the pipes since we can't blame the absentee fathers or poor parenting.

@justmyopinion

Did anyone say lead poisoning is the ONLY cause of violence in kids?

@justmyopinion- no, I don't think that's what researchers believe....Many factors perpetuate violent behavior and criminal activity; there are confounding variables.  You have to look at each individual and find out why they are violent or committ crimes.  The high lead levels may or may not be one of those variables for SOME not all.  The researchers are trying to find out why there is so much anger and violence, not cast dispersions on poorer communities or developmentally disabled and mentally challenged children or adults.  But, if lead is a factor, or variable,  it can be resolved and levels reduced.  Undiagnosed high lead levels cause physiological changes in the brain affecting behavior.  But, studies are just recent as data is not always easy to obtain.

I think lead testing should be mandatory in high risk areas and schools.  It was at one time but with the gasoline changes, it was thought the problem was resolved.

@SeaMaiden

Which brand shower and bath filters are you using?
We had one on our showerhead which was purchased at HSN but you have to continually change the filter otherwise all of the toxins accumulate in them.

Re: Is there a link between lead and so many diagnoses of mental illness ?

I agree with you @Stray many factors contribute to violence.

FYI

"Seven small communities in Maryland exceeded EPA’s action level for lead in March 2015, according to MDE.   The neighborhoods with the high lead levels were the Glen Meadows Retirement Community in Baltimore County; Woodbine Village in Carroll County; Rockbrook Village Mobile Home Park in Carroll County; Golden Kay Apartments in Cecil County; Bay Country Estates Mobile Home Park in Cecil County; the Town of Betterton in Kent County;   and the Conococheague Apartments in Washington County, according to MDE."

It's not only impoverished areas and inner cities that have lead pipes.

 @justmyopinion- you are right, with gentrification, many older neighborhoods which were poor communities are now wealthy neighborhoods and with elaborate renovations, there comes a higher risk.  I just heard a report that Chicago has all lead pipes but the EPA in Chicago states they are lined but now there are lead readings in the drinking water.   I worked Public Health and Obstetrics early in my career when lead testing was mandatory.  It seems we should revisit those policies.

Re: Is there a link between lead and so many diagnoses of mental illness ?

Pointing to poverty as correlation to crime does not automatically put blame on those who are poor.

Children being exposed to lead from pipes or paint is usually because of slumlords who don't take care of the property. It is not the fault of those who reside in their property.

Nutrition is also a factor for the poor, and when there isn't enough money for decent lunches for the children, another problem is those who complain about free lunches provided for those children in need.
