Is it rude to cry when someone tells you their sad news....

I just ran into a woman I haven't seen in a while. She is from Romania. Her DD lives here and has two young daughters and her son stayed in Romania and was married and had a son. We used to hang out in the playground when my DD was a baby and her grand daughter was a baby. I hadn't seen her in a while and she told me that her son and daughter in law and grandson ( not the ones here but the ones back in Romania) were killed in a car accident. The whole time she was telling me I was weeping. I felt like kind of an idiot like I should have stood there and listened and just been strong for her while she was telling me but I just felt so sad for her. I couldn't help it. It's just so awful news. Was I out of bounds?
