A back up camera allows you to see a small child on a bike or a pet that you might not be able to see. It's a tool. It doesn't replace anything. But you knew that...
And for a hundred years, people managed to back up without them, yes?
Why, I'm sure that you even managed to back up without the use of a camera, before it's invention, yes?

It's a safety feature.
Don't use it if you have such a problem with it.

Ok, honestly I don't mind many of the new features they are putting on the new vehicles. Some of them are for convenience and some for safety. But if it takes me more then 15 minutes of reading the manual to figure how to set it or how it works, forget it.
Another thing that annoys me to no end is how they limit the options you can get on certain models. I wanted a sports suspension on my present car, so I had to order a particular model (sports edition). They only manufacturered that model in certain colors and there was only a choice of two interior colors and it was only available with gunmetal color rims instead of chrome.

Honestly, it's surprising how much wider your view is with the back up camera.
There is no way to see underneath the rear window just from turning your head around or using your mirrors.
I would rather be safe than sorry backing up...

My husband's car is a 2014 with more gadgets and every once in a while he gets a low tire warning on his dash (especially during the change of seasons). One time it was the tire warning system itself that had to be fixed. I know it is a safety feature but I'm glad I don't have to deal with that.
@itsmagic OMG don't get me started! When I got my new car with this "safety feature", it took three, count them, three trips to the dealership to finally get one of those devices that actually worked and stopped going off every month. And I work full time so that was incredibly inconvenient and costly since I don't get paid if I'm not clocked in.
I almost, almost donned the ninja outfit and stole my old car back.
Seriously, I love that feature. Properly maintaining your tire pressure, particularly during changes in the season, is very important. Proper tire pressure extent the life of the tire, improve gas mileage and allows for better handling. Anyone who has ever had a slow leak in a tire will tell you how valuable that feature is.
@CrazyDaisy I did just fine for the first 12 years of my driving life with a gas station air pump and a plastic tire pressure gauge.
And yes I've had plenty of flats in my life but they were all due to lazy construction workers who didn't secure or pick up their nails and screws after the job was done.
Good luck finding a gas station air pump around here.

A "safety feature" that people somehow managed to live without for many decades, yes?
As for my car, it isn't even on there.
If it was, I would have them remove it, or disable it.
I have been around to backup just fine since 1989, and haven't needed it in all of those years, and don't need it now.
I know how to back up without it.
No piece of "technology" can ever replace good old fashioned experience.
I trust myself, not some computerized gizmo.

All this fuss for a feature you don't even have?
LOL

I love being able to see around the cars next to me in the parking lot when backing up. Always seems to be a van or truck, with the camera you can see everything long before you could just turning around. I also think with the back up light and camera you can really see so much better at night.

I said the very same thing last year when I purchased a new car. New cars are a rip off enough without having all those added features I don't care about. Why not focus on making cars out of something other than plastic??? I hate new cars! Way too expensive and have been for some time now.
