Is is it safe to give your social security # when applying for a job on-line?

I'm not concerned about a background check, I have nothing to hide. But I am concerned with identity theft. If I omit it, or if I put a *** for the first 3 numbers, won't they see this as a red flag? I don't want this to stand in the way of getting an interview. Thanks.
