First of all, judging a book by its cover--this one is beautiful. Done in sepia, the front features a slender man leaning against a bookcase; the back shows a woman (her back to us) looking for a book in another old-fashioned bookcase.
The writing is wonderful: I was completely enthralled from the word go. I was extolling the wonders of this book to a few friends. At this point, I read the inside flap of the cover. And I thought: this isn't really my kind of book.
And then the story took a wild turn and I was just kind of enduring the images the sometimes ghastly descriptions produced. But I read on.
Now I'm not sure how I feel. . .I hope my initial joy returns.
The telling point will be whether or not I decide to buy the book once I've completed it.
I do recommend this for a variety of reasons--most importantly, because the author (Lauren Owen) is gifted, and because the cover is so lovely.
I hope some of you are giving it a try.

Keep us updated. Right now besides not having enough time and too many books what would keep me from reading it is looking at it and one review saying they know it has to have a sequel
