There are many different models and several sizes to choose from. Models have more pre-set buttons and bells and whistles as you go up in price.
If you don't know what he wants to use it for, a Duo SV or Duo Plus is probably a good place to start. A 6-quart is a pretty good standard size that will fit a whole chicken if he wants to do that, where a 3-quart might not. If he has a family, the 8 quart might be better.

You can also check Good Housekeeping's article called The Best Instant Pot Models of 2019. They have sales links, so I can't paste the article link here. They recommend the Instant Pot Duo as the best overall and the Instant Pot Lux as the best for a beginner.
