@songbird wrote:@IamMrsG I think grocery stores have contracts with instacart. It used to be some grocery stores had separate delvery deals with consumers. But they make more money with instacart.
Our grocer, HEB, has something called Favor, but it doesnt look like they do full grocery orders they are called "runners" and might pick up a couple things at the grocery store, and deliver HEB Phamarcy's prescriptions or OTC medicine, beer/wine, and deliver food from fast food places...They advertise as taking care of errands you dont have time for....its weird....Ive never used it....In their commercials they have one small insulated bag they carry for delivery....

@IamMrsG wrote:I’m confused about delivery fees. Through my grocery store’s website, I just placed my first Instacart order, without benefit of an Instacart Express membership. My 18 items totaled $72.09, plus tax. Obviously, that’s more than double the $35 requisite, but added to my charges was a $3.99 delivery fee, a service fee of $3.30 and a pre-determined tip of $3.30, adding an additional $10.59 to the bill. The final balance due was $83.96.
As previously mentioned throughout this thread, I did see offers of “spend $35 and get free delivery,” but each was attached to a specific line of brands, inferring I’d have to buy $35 worth of this, that or the other. Or, is having an Instacart Express membership ($10 mo., or $99 yr), what gives you free delivery for orders of $35 or more? Not to further conflagrate the issue, but what if, with the Express membership, an order is less than the minimum?
I thought the service I received was good, received 16 of my 18 items with 2 acceptable substitutions. As circumstances call for it, which I imagine they will, I will confidently use the service again. But I would like to understand how the charges for it are determined.
Edited to correct a typo.
I'll be watching for the answers because I'm been wondering about the same thing. My grocery of choice offers delivery, but when I went to their website I saw that the delivery is through Instacart.
If you want more detailed info about Instacart please see the other posts in this topic...
At checkout a 5% tip is shown. If you want you can take out the tip (its optional, the delivery people get paid an hourly wage, but I always tip)..... The Express Membership eliminates the Delivery Fee, but you have to spend $35. If you are an Express Member and your order is LESS than $35 you do get charged the Delivery Fee..... Everyone gets charged a Service fee it pays for things like insurance, employee background checks, and cost of running the business.
So it cost you $10.59, and taking out the optional tip Instacart would have cost you $7.09 whether thats worth it to you.....thats something only you can decide...

Wait..what?? I thought we had to buy a minimum of $35 to even have it delivered, regardless of membership??
Nevermind! I figured it out!

Thanks for the help @Spurt . Trying to figure out the total cost above and beyond the cost of the groceries. So I pay $10.59 per delivery and $10 a month for membership. Is that correct?

If you join the Express membership and place an order of $35+ then the delivery fee of $3.99 is waived. If your order, as a member, is less than $35 then you will be charged the deliver fee of $3.99. Express memberships can be purchased monthly ($9.99) or for a year ($99).
All shoppers, including Express members, have to make a minimum purchase of $10 in order to use the IC service. Any amount less than $10 will not be processed.

So that’s the $10 a month that I was referring to, right? And I’m assuming an order that’s always above $35. So $10 per month for the Express membership plus $10.59 per delivery?

Monthly membership costs $9.99. With that you get free delivery with every order above $35. With each order you place, you will be charged a service fee and an optional tip which are based on the amount of the purchase price.
