We don't just put water bottles in a bin. In my state, you put your plastic bottles in a machine and they are shredded to confetti size pieces of plastic.
It varies from one place to another. In some locales, it's up to the residents to sort and place recyclables in different types of bins which are picked up at the curb just like the other trash. I do wonder if the recycling process is effective, since we don't really see what happens next... and next.
That doesn't make any sense to me. Then how do you get your nickle deposit back for each bottle if you don't bring them back to the store to recycle them?
Recycling programs are different from one state to the next, particularly when it comes to container deposits (they don't all have those). It really would help for it to be standardized across the country.

Dumps are full of K-cups and disposable diapers, too.

No, no deposit in our state (I'm actually going between 2 states right now, neither of which has container deposits).
O/T: Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode, with the guys going from one state to another to get a better return on the bottles.

Exactly! We stopped years ago and won't ever buy them again.
Many of the bottled waters aren't any better, and sometimes worse, than your own home water supply. Waste of money.
Use a home water filtering system if you'd feel better about it. There are many out there, from simple/cheap to bigger & more expensive.
I remember a segment on a news show a few years back where a scientist called bottled water "dead" water, as it doesn't contain the minerals that we need.
I don't buy bottled water, haven't for years.

I refuse to buy a Keurig. I don't care how good (supposedly) the coffee is.
It's just totally environmentally irresponsible.

And if you do have plastic bottles, refill them and keep reusing them.
You are not supposed to do this because of bacteria.
You can buy water bottles.

I'd don't buy bottled water, I use a Pur water filter and a stainless travel thermos. Most of the bottled water is just filtered water not anything special. I also don't use a single serve coffee maker, paper plates, paper cups, or paper napkins.
I don't have grandchildren but those who do are leaving a dump for them to inherit.
