Probably better to have both front and back. Just in case we see something 'fishy'/illegal/whatever, we can jot down the front plate. Oh, also, when driving, and someone is driving behind us, driving badly/illegally/whatever, we can make a mental note of his/her front plates, and call 911.

Only rear license plate here in PA. We travel up and down the east coast and have never been pulled over in another state.

We have front and rear license plates in Washington, BUT we are only required to have yearly tabs on the rear plate.
