Re: Ilia Malinin- World Championships

I agree with several of the viewpoints expressed here.

I was lucky enough to see both Jason Brown and Ilia's performances and I think that Ilia's performance will be spoken about and replayed for years.  To be able to

come on the ice after the young man from Japan had performed so beautifully and deliver such a flawless program full of historically difficult jumps was incredible.

That having been said, I also agree with @Greeneyedlady21  that the current (and most likely permanent) emphasis of athleticism over artistry

has taken a large degree of figure skating's appeal away.

Even though quadless, Jason Brown is like watching art and reading poetry. He has no chance however, against the jumping machines of today.

Even the women's programs are less aesthetic and

captivating than say...Kristi Yamaguchi (my personal favorite!)

I know that the Peggy Fleming days when grace was about 95% of the performance and skaters would barely lift off the ice were the polar opposite of what we see today, but the Yamaguchi, Oksana Baiul days combined art and athletics more evenly than today's crop.

Today's NBA is apparently appealing to the young, but it used to be a rule in basketball that if one touched the rim it was ruled no basket.  Today players not only touch the rim they hang off of it and swing!

Driving the lane for a lay-up is almost forgotten as players are content to bomb three pointers from half court instead of the brilliant ball handling and passing of Magic and Larry.

I think that sports today accurately reflect society.

Lots of sizzle and very little steak!

@kaydee50,

I'm so glad you mentioned Adam Siao!

I hadn't heard of him or watched but just did. I liked his skating the most of all the men.

I love how he used his hands and arms with so much expression and the leaps and spins were wonderful.

I didn't know he won bronze either.

I watched most all on youtube after they were done. I love how you can watch so many things on you tube on a computer, laptop, phone-just put it in the search bar and there it is! Thank you Youtube!

For all you ice skating fans, does anyone miss the Russians?  I know I don't although a couple of the women were terrific.

Re: Ilia Malinin- World Championships

It's kind of boring.  You know when the winner of the pairs (woman) is over 40, there is not much competiton. I never watch the men's event.  And not the dance event either.  Just the pairs and the Ladies.

Re: Ilia Malinin- World Championships

Just took some time this morning to watch.

OMG

Magnificent!

I understand athleticism vs artistry, but this young man's performance and his reaction had measures of both! LOVE.

To the poster who mentioned Magic and Larry. Those were the days!
