My husband and I have separate accounts. He banks with Wells Fargo. I don't. Twice over the last month, I've gone into Wells Fargo for him to deposit a check. The only two times ever I've done this for him. You know... the old fashioned way. You have a check, you fill out a deposit slip. You hand it to the teller. They work their magic and hand you the receipt back and you're done. By the way, I'm on his signature card.
Both times I've gone, the teller has asked me if we use the account a lot (my husband does) and do we have an ATM or debit card for the account. Uh no, the account has been open forever and my husband isn't interested in those. The teller then looked at the deposit slip like she'd never seen one before, ever. Seriously. She proceeded to tell me that effective in April (on the 15th I think), "times, they are a changin" and they won't have deposit slips anymore. My guess is that they're going to have keypads or something and to deposit something, we'll need the PIN from one of the cards we don't have. She mentioned that they'll need the PIN. I said "well, we don't have a PIN". She looked positively shocked.
Both times, I was in a hurry so I didn't have time to wax poetic with her, but I told her that my husband has 3 accounts there and doesn't have an ATM or debit card for any of them and if this is going to cause us problems when depositing, cashing checks, etc., then we're going to have a problem with that. The last thing we want is 3 more plastic cards to keep up with. I've just about talked him into closing one of the accounts so we'd be down to two there.
We're going to go either tomorrow or Monday and talk to the customer service rep, but I just wondered if anyone else has run into this yet?
I know we live in the technology age, whether it's all good for us or not, but when someone gives me a check, I'd like to be able to deposit it in the bank without having to jump through hoops.

Maybe your local bank can make a few special (temporary, until the requested deposit slips are sent to you.) deposit slips for your hubby? With his acct. number printed on it. If he has a checking account, and doesn't mind depositing the check to that account, maybe he can use one of those deposit slips at the back of each checkbook. Next time, though, just ask to speak to the manager. Forget bantering with the tellers. I always get better and faster service when I walk in, and immediately ask to speak to the manager. Saves a lot of time. Oh, and another thing, on the back of each of his checks, make sure he writes 'For deposit only to acct #_______.' And under that, his signature. That usually works well, too.

Just give them the account number and say put this check there. I doubt very much they will refuse you.

If the bank isn't using deposit slips after April 15th, why would they make a few special deposit slips for him?

I do everything (including depositing checks) for my Wells Fargo account online. I also pay all my bills online. Automatic paycheck deposit. Wouldn't want it any other way. Saves me a LOT of time.

I used to occasionally deposit a check at the drive-up ATM at one of my credit unions, using my debit card to sign in & make the deposit. A few years ago, I stopped by & there weren't any deposit envelopes, so I parked & walked into the ATM that was in the lobby. Now, when I want to deposit a check, I just enter that option when I sign in, then the check goes face-up on into the slot. The machine takes a photo of the check, which appears on my printed receipt. Pretty nifty!

I think sometimes we just end up having to conform to progress. Even if he doesn't want to USE a debit card, just get one and set up a PIN, and be done with it.
Not a fan of WF, though. Both of us have our accounts with BofA. I just do an e-only account and it's great. I don't miss going in the bank and standing in line. Now days you can deposit anything, including cash, at the ATM (but you need that PIN) and it's flawless. It shows you the check and/or the cash amount before you punch it through, so you know your money isn't going into space or something.
A debit card is mega-convenient - no more writing checks in stores and just the savings on buying checks is worth it. I pretty much thought all accounts had debit cards these days, just on an automatic basis. At some point he will have to join the 21st century. It's just the way it is.

Can you have all your deposits direct deposited?

Maybe the teller made a mistake, regarding the 'no more deposit slips in April' statement. Sometimes banks hire part-time college students, and who knows if that teller had the correct info. Sounds as though she didn't know what to do with the deposit slip and check......
