I use Equifax (or it could be Experian?) to place a credit freeze on my account. It means no one can open a new account in my name or take out a loan unless I unfreeze it. I monitor my credit cards myself by checking online frequently.

I just set up all my credit cards so I am notified by e-mail any time a charge is made over $5.
That's easy, fast and free.
Plus I have the same freeze as Mom2Dogs has.

Auto Club members are entitled to free basic credit monitoring services through Experian. They also offer an upgraded service for an annual fee that’s a little less expensive than Lifelock’s annual fee. I’m thinking of switching when my Lifelock subscription expires early next year.
