I don't know who Miss Read is but I have read Mitford books.

You would probably really like the Miss Julia series by Ann Ross.

I have read most of the Miss Read books--love them!

The Miss Julia series is a different style of story-telling, but I adore her as well.

I also like Agatha Raisin, Inspector Gamache, and the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency (this last focuses only mildly on mystery--but it's wondrous).

I enjoyed Angela Thirkell's books about her Barsetshire characters. Also E.F. Benson's "Mapp and Lucia" books. Both writers have long since passed, but their humour and wit is alive in their many novels. You can get a list of their books by googling them.

Of modern writers, I would also echo insomniac's recommendation of Alexander McCall Smith's novels. Not just the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, but also those set in Scotland and England. Wonderful, quirky characters.

Patrick Taylor has a series set in Ireland. There is also the Mossy Creek series which is authored by several different people. They both remind me a bit of the Mitford books.

I was wondering if the Miss Read books must be read in order?

I wouldn't say the books have to be read in order. Things progress, but not so much that it makes that big of an impact (life in a very small British village!).
