Re: I've never been on a cruise, what do you do during the day?

I love going on cruises.  I've never met anyone who's been on as many as my son-in-law's parents though.

To start with they've been on 2 around the world cruises (gone for months at a time).  They've been everywhere.  They just treated the entire family for a 10 day cruise at Christmas to the Cayman Islands, etc.

When we went one time we played the slot machines and won $400!  My daughter and I were so stupid we didn't even realize we'd won until someone told us.  That almost covered 1/2 of the bill from where she'd turned 21 during the cruise and ordered (but didn't drink) every mixed drink in the world!  Ha!  An expensive lesson but a good one!

I doubt many people dislike their cruise.  I remember when I talked to the waiter he said, "Think about it.  When was the last time you said a kid with motion sickness"?  Just don't think about it and you'll be fine.  We all were fine but the people in the cabin next to my daughters vomited the entire cruise.  It was terrible.

I know you'll have fun.  Enjoy life!

Re: I've never been on a cruise, what do you do during the day?

It is not true that cruise ships always wait for their sponsored tours to return to ship.  It depends on many factors, one of which is the port regulations.  About 7 years ago I was on a Celebrity ship docked in Oahu; there was a carnival ship next to us.  They had previously docked in Hilo.  While there one of their buses had problems about 4 hours from the ship.  The Carnival Captain was on the tour.  They got him back to the ship and he tried to delay scheduled departure but due to port regs he couldn't (so they went onto Oahu).  The 30 or so passengers left behind were put up in a hotel, fed and flown into Oahu in the morning.  So it is true they take care of their tour people.  That said, I book private tours, don't do stupid things (like over scheduling) and have travel insurance to cover unforeseen circumstances.

Lets see there is eating, a few shows, tour of cities but first they paraded us  thru a bunch of T-Shirt vendors that kept saying "Come here don't you want a T-Shirt"? We had to go thru the vendors to get to where we wanted to go. Then we went to a private Island which had no trees...water that was about knee deep. There were stumps in the sand and my mother broke her toe. There was swimming on board which was slippery and my youngest fell and cut her chin open and had to have stitches. Oh...Then I was sea-sick every day all day long...couldn't even hold food down.  Our room was just above the motors to the boat and we heard that all night. We kept saying we needed to find a T-Shirt that said are we having fun yet? lol

I need to try one again.

Yes, try a higher end cruise line. There's really no comparison.

Regarding the accident, yes, they can happen anywhere, but you couldn't PAY me to step foot on a Carnival ship.

High end cruise lines are the BEST! I've been on several. Carnival is the low end of cruise lines.

we used regent cruise lines to go through the panama canal and to go to alaska.  best trips ever!  food, rooms. entertainement. activities, etc.  all top of the line.

O/T I have located and caught up with KatherineW! She is going to re-join us here on the boards! I figured since they do go on cruises, she might post here first! LOL

She said to tell the girls she's coming back!

Here is what I have heard about a cruise that a veteran traveler related. The went across the ocean and were aboard ship during the Paris shootings. (Could not get updates)

Refill your bottled water container from the taps on board. Usually no ice available in Rome... But one of the little cafes that she was too snooty to eat in turned out to have THE BEST homemade pasta and the nice lady secretly brought her ice for her Coke!

Get tours for your time on land. They opted for a private tour of the Vatican ($$) and were allowed to touch artifacts that others weren't.

Because jobs are lacking over there, PhDs in Anthropology were often their tour guides. HTH

Oh she shopped at Hermes and got a bag for 1K less than in US!!!

There are casinos, movie theaters, nightly shows and best of all midnight buffets every night and all the food you can eat! At dinner one night I had lobster and said to my husband that I'd sure like another one. Little did I know our waiter overheard me and the thing I knew there was another lobster in front of me with all the trimmings!
