Caller must be hyper-sensitive to lanolin, which is what helps keep the wool water-resistant. Must have been a very funny call to hear. She probably wouldn't want to buy any natural wool, then, if it might smell like the animal from which it came - rabbit, alpaca, llama, yak, buffalo. I wonder if she's sensitive to wool fabric, too?

The sweater that the caller complained about was a TSV last year or the year before. It was done by Kilronan, not the rep from Aran Craft that the caller was speaking to.

The sweater was awful, as I purchased one. When I opened the package, the odor was awful. I tried airing for several days and it did not help. It was sent back.

The reviews for the sweater were terrible, all indicating the same problem.

I have several Navajo rugs which of course are sheep wool. I never noticed any odor from them. Even my sheep dogs, who are herding instinct certified, don't have any reaction to the rugs. I was warned never to use conventional methods of cleaning them as it destroys the lanolin.

That's too bad. There are methods for thoroughly cleaning the fiber when it's sheared, so it sounds like somebody either skipped a step, or was just plain too lazy or in too much of a hurry to do it properly.
