I'm finding kitty claws...what does that mean?

At the risk of opening myself up to cries of "bad mommy!" and other verbal abuse...

I'm finding an occasional kitty claw on the floor or carpet. My kitties have me well trained to let them in or out, depending on their momentary preference. And there are three dedicated scratching areas that they use. So when I see the discarded claw, I don't know what it means.

Any ideas?
