Me, too! It's not that I don't like people; I do. I just like animals - like my cats, in particular - more. Smiley Happy

I know how you feel - I tend to be that way, too. It's an unfortunate situation around here with animal shelters (and I've heard this is prevalent in many parts of the country) because the people at the shelters won't allow you to adopt a dog or cat unless you live in what they consider a perfect environment. People, including me, are being rejected for adoption even though we've just lost a dog or a cat that we had and loved for 16 or more years. My vet said she would give a glowing recommendation if the shelter called because she believes my daughter and I are wonderful pet parents and has known us forever. However, I work full-time. Even though my mom will be dropping by daily to walk and play with the dog and I have holidays and summer vacation, I've been rejected for pet adoption. They also reject people for not having a fenced in yard, not owning a home even if their landlord has given written permission for the animal, having kids that are young, having another animal if that particular shelter worker doesn't believe in more than one, only wanting the one animal if that particular shelter worker believes there should be more than one, etc. The people around here who work in shelters are volunteers and usually have no formal training or education about animals yet they put their own "judgment" above that of a vet. Sorry to rant but I just dealt with this today. Sadly, it drives many loving families to breeders and leaves many animals sitting in shelters longer than they ever need to. So yes, I do tend to like animals more than people. They make more sense.

Are you dealing with a kill or no kill shelter? Does your area animal control also have animals for adoption? Perhaps looking at a kill shelter or at animal control you will find more reasonable adoption policies. There is also your local newspaper or (gasp) Craigslist.

I know kill shelters are often not the first place one looks to adopt a pet but it is my first choice because I know the chances of a dog or cat surviving in a kill shelter are slim at best. The lucky ones are in no kill shelters.

What I mean is I volunteer at an animal shelter and I am so sick at what I see. Maybe I didn't explain my thread correctly. We try so hard to take care of the animals and then people come in and make up stories to surrender their own animals, etc. Lots of stuff that is bad. Sorry to vent but something happened today that makes me feel so down.

It makes me ill to hear and see how people treat animals. I get so upset and it only confirms why people choose animals over people. A story that was on the news the other night was horrible!!!! At least it had a happy ending for the puppy.

But see... it looks like 99% of us on this thread would get along and agree at least on this subject. And that is a good thing. We are the voice for innocent animals. {#emotions_dlg.wub}

Re: I like animals more than people.

I can understand people being afraid of animals, but I don't understand people who don't like animals. I had a woman tell me that she doesn't like cats because she doesn't like the way their bones feel. I know in the state where I live animals are considered property, but you still will be prosecuted if you neglect and mistreat them, thank goodness.

That is terribly wrong thinking. Jesus said we are to love people and be good to those that do us wrong.

You know what , TaxiLady? I'm Catholic and went to church every Sunday with my mom. Yeh, people are cool but if you think that I am supposed to think that I am going to be good to Michael Vick, and anyone else who harms animals I guess my Jesus hates me. You know what? Jesus would be proud that I stand up for animal abuse!! I'm off for the night. I pray for all the animals that are suffering and people who think I should stick up for the ones who do the abuse.
