Re: I just did something really dumb...

[ Edited ]

Funny thing just happened.

I was expecting a box from Amazon/UPS.

Sitting here, someone knocks.

I look out to see if the UPS truck is there. Nope.

They knock again.

I didn't say anything.

Moments later, a young lady, walked to her car & left. She had an entire backseat filled with packages.   She was one of those private carriers hired by UPS during the holiday season.

Yep, there was my package leaned against my door.

I can't imagine who would open the door to someone you didn't know.

ETA: She was dressed in casual regular workout clothes w/ no mention of UPS/Amazon anywhere.

@Carmie - I have heard of this before around Indy.  Only when you come outside to talk to them about working on your driveway, someone is sneaking in the back door to take your purse or wallet.  They work in groups. I'm so thankful nothing happened.

Yeah, this is why you keep ALL doors and windows locked at all times.  I'm sure somebody will come along and call me paranoid.  But it's more that I'm a reality-based thinker who never felt safe as a child, so I do what is necessary to feel safe now that I can be in control.  Smiley Happy

Another thing I do, if I do answer the front door, is that I don't unlock and open the storm door  so at least there is one lock between me and the person on my porch.  Until I feel safe about it, or see that it's somebody I know (incl the mailman, UPS driver, etc), I don't unlock/open that storm door.  I also look out to the sides before I open it even if I'm just getting my mail.   Somebody could be hiding to the side, waiting for you to open the door and before you know it, you're skrewed.

I don't think you are paranoid at all. I think you are being proactive, and in this world you have to be..Better to be safe than sorry!!!!!

I would never let anyone in my house I didn't know. If it was someone I was excepting that would be different.

Re: I just did something really dumb...

I once did something similar 20-25 years ago.  A young guy in his early 20's knocked on the door and asked to use my phone as his car had broken down.  I let him in without thinking.  He made some call and left.  I didn't analyze this until later, we are the furthest house off the road on a long driveway.  No one really in trouble would have picked us to find a phone.  I figured he was casing the joint, so to speak.  We had a modest TV and stereo at the time, not worth stealing, then or later.  Since then if I don't recognize the person I don't even answer the door.

@ROMARY - Oh, Romary, I didn't take it that way at all. I was just pointing out how stupid I feel since I warn people all the time about these things.  I just don't know what I was thinking when I said "come on in"!  Thank God my 81 pound greyhound was standing right next to me (even though she's a sweetheart and probably wouldn't hurt a fly!)

Thankfully you were protected from harm. I once gave a ride to a man who standing on the road outside of the church entry, he was on crutches with one leg, I felt sorry for him, I just came from church. I thanked the good Lord I was protected and no harm came to me. But, I will never be that foolish again.

I have not heard of too many one legged killers on crutches in the news..... Smiley Happy

@hoosieroriginal I think I would call the police and give them a heads-up just in case he was checking out houses to rob.

SeaMaiden: I'm guessing sometimes they (perpetrators) could pretend to need help; maybe pretend to be disabled, etc.  We have to be careful unless there are other folks all around to help out.

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).
