But it's not..... it's mine.

NO, but really, some mentioned turning it in.... if you turn it in and they have no takers or no one claims it, then they return it to you?  or you go back and get it?  Then you are free to spend it how you want?

On the other hand, some may look at this as (to stay in line with community standards) how it was suppose to be... this was suppose to happen to you since you were in that place at that time.... maybe for being there for someone else or doing some good for someone or lending or giving when you did not really have it to give.

@songbird  You did the right thing checking as far as you could.  It's yours.  You should do whatever you want to with it.  Congrats on the find!!

eta...When you checked with the library and the senior center, did you leave your phone number?  I would do that, so that in the next few days if whoever lost it traces their steps looking for it, they could call you to claim it.

I did that when I found a $50 bill in a local store.  Checked to see if anyone had said they'd lost anything, "here's my number."  Nobody called.

Yes.  I left my name and phone number.  it had to be either the library or senor center.  There is nothing else!!!  It comprises of only one block.  Across the streets are apartments and woods.   This is a semi rural area. I don't want to feel like I should apologize for this.  Little too much now.  Half a dozen people telling I should do this, no, do that, no do.....  That's it.  Nobody reported any money missing.  Heavens knows how long it was lying on the pavement.  I only found it because I had been having trouble with shoe laces and I was looking down when I walked.  You could have easily missed it.

@songbirdJust because the $ was found between the library and the senior center does not prove somebody from one of those places lost that money. Checking out those two places may be a good thing but doesn't really mean it's the only route to check.

Do you really need that $20?  Something tells me the $40 will remain with you in entirety.

Somebody's loss will be felt.  Perhaps giving the total to soften another person's struggle would be better.

@Cakers3   I see you make assumptions also.

My friend found $80 in the pocket of a coat she bought at a thrift store. It isn’t a nonprofit store and no way to know who had donated the coat, so she kept the money. Lesson...check all the pockets before you donate clothing! I found a Visa card, expired, in a handbag at a flea market...the dealer saw me pull it out and grabbed it.....

@songbird  - aren't you sorry you posted this in the first place? I think twice these days before I post anything here, as I've gotten myself into some confrontations on more than one occasion because of my openness. Once it's posted, it's out of your hands. I wish you good luck with whatever decision you make. It's all up to you to decide.

@songbird I hope you are ignoring this attempt to make you feel guilty about something. I am gathering that it is never a good idea to come here and ask the group what one should do with found money. Do what you want, what you feel comfortable with...whatever it is.  As long as it’s legal, of course. 😄

@MarkeieMark  Do people here take things too literally? I took your post to mean that you turn it in to the nearest store…in return for purchases.

Well I forget how many people take things so seriously these days.  I guess I'll have to keep my day job.  I just didn't bother tryng to explain.  Thanks for getting it.
