Re: I can't think of anything more aggravating . . .

Thank goodness!! The maintenance man just called me and said he is mowing his lawn and then has to take a shower, but should be here in about an hour. He didn't seem angry. Perhaps he has helped others in the building with this before. I told him I had the batteries. So my ordeal will be over soon!!

Thank you all for your concern and your suggestions. I would have called the Fire Dept. next.

Re: I can't think of anything more aggravating . . .

Is it battery operated or is it wired into your electrical panel? It can't be both.

If it's battery operated then it may be your problem to solve, changing the battery. If it's wired into the electrical system than it's management's problem and is probably defective and needs changed. However, it could be a dust issue and fixed by using the extension on your vacumn to pull out the dust.

Either way, it's not operational and a hazard since it won't set off an alarm in case of fire. That's an emergency and if the law where you live mandates that rentals have to have a working smoke detector than being without is a violation and the owners could get a fine if they don't remedy the issue today.

Now that you are getting this resolved, maybe you are ready for a funny?

This link takes you to the Youtube video of the Friends episode segments of when Phoebe had a smoke detector beeping and could not stop it (there is an advertisement before the video starts, sorry)

That was SO funny!!! I was working when that show was on so I never watched TV in those days. I missed a lot of good stuff. It's the simple things that are funny most of the time. And that was really funny!! Thanks for posting.

Re: I can't think of anything more aggravating . . .

Our smoke alarms operate on electricity, with a battery backup for outages, so the battery still needs to be replaced. We put lithium batteries in them because they have a longer life. Ford, maybe you already know this, but if you can, replace with lithium batteries.

Ford, I'm glad you're going to get some relief! I'd go out of my mind if I had to listen to that sound for the entire weekend.

He asked me if I had the rectangular 9v batteries and I told him yes. So I guess they are the right ones.

What I don't understand is why that is not considered urgent. They list about 10 things they consider urgent, and the smoke alarms are not one of them, which is why I didn't leave a message for them last night. This time I did and thankfully he is coming . . . SOON I hope!!
