@RescueLover They truly appreciate it, especially hot summer mornings. It's just something little they appreciate.

@skatting44 Of course it is illegal to falsify records. How in the heck do you know he is not reporting.? Many people her in CA with current licenses , who are small business do ask cash. They let you know up front. If they have a license, and they do the job I am not worried. I pay...and the rest is up to his conscience and the government. I am always concerned about them doing the job, correctly and not suing me if they get hurt. So license and such is a must

for me it depends on the quality of job that was done

@haddon9 First we never get the price after the work is finished.
Always get an estimate preferably in writing.
I have no problem paying cash but how did you know he shared that tip with his employees?

@Cakers3 I usually get an estimate of jobs done too. We are having work done on the house and had to get a detailed estimate from my contractor.
However with the mulch & weeding DH never did get it from him but I had a rough idea of the cost that's why I had gotten just enough to pay cash.
I am assuming that he pays his assisitants well enough otherwise I'm sure they wouldn't be working for him. What he pays them is between them. We have been using him for a few years and he's very honset.
It started getting dark and he couldn't finish the job even after more than 5 hours and he told DH that he would be back in the morning to finish. I was surpised but from what I could see they did a great job plus we had a lot of weeds that they took care of.

Paid in cash means he didn't pay taxes, benefits for employee, payroll taxes, federal unemployment tax, Social Security tax, Medicare tax, etc.
Do you really want to tip someone who is skirting the law?

@haddon9 No, I would not have tipped him. He's a contractor who charges what he charges. Nothing else is expected. 5 hours/$950 for 2 people?? That's a high hourly rate. And he doesn't accept a check?? Trust you have a lot of acreage for just weeding and mulching??

I don't tip my yard company. They set a price and I pay that price. I don't believe in tipping for every service but realize that I may be in the minority. I do put out cold water during the summer for them because, even though they come early in the morning, it's still hot and humid here. My property is about 3/4 of an acre, they charge $75 every two weeks and are here for about 15 minutes. The owner never comes by, only his crews of about 4 or 5 members. I wouldn't even know how to tip them if I felt I needed to do so.
