I Saved Money On My Car Insurance!

I have been a member of AAA ever since I got my license back in 1989.

Okay, I'll be the first to admit that I was a dumb, stupid idiot for not having paid closer attention to things, so no one needs to knock me over the head for that.

I went in to the local AAA office today to get some information on something, and once that was concluded, the helpful woman behind the counter asked me if there was anything else that she could help me with.

I decided to pay for my insurance (I pay monthly) for the month, and I gave her my drivers license.

She went to look me up on the computer, only to discover that I had TWO Premier policies!

Now, I was paying over $300/month for my insurance.

Yes, I thought that was steep, but I thought that since I had a newer car, and I had a policy that had all the bells and whistles, that, that was just how much it cost.

As it turned out, I had one policy from 2011, and another from 2016.

My dad and I were on the same policy for a numer of years, as were our vehicles, until he had to give up driving in 2016.

I honestly don't know how  all of this happened, but they cancelled the 2016 policy.

So, all this time, I was actually paying for two policies.

So now, instead of paying over $300/momth, I'll only be paying a little over $100/month.

The woman said that while she couldn't give me a quote, she did say that I should be getting a refund!

As I said, I know that I was a dumb, stupid idiot for not having paid closer attention, but if I had not gone in today to take care of other business, I still would not know about this second policy.

So, yes, I did save money on my car insurance today.Woman Very Happy

You thought $3,600 a year was a typical premium for one person???

Re: I Saved Money On My Car Insurance!

Ten years ago when I added my 17 year old son as a driver on my auto policy, the insurance company raised my rates by $3600!!

My agent said that the company didn't like insuring young drivers so they hiked the rates.

I ended up leaving that company for another. They wrote the policy for the same premium I was paying before I added my son.

You should always shop around.Insurance rates are more competitive than you think.

Re: I Saved Money On My Car Insurance!

Are you saying you have been paying on two policies since 2011. I find it strange that AAA didn't catch the duplicate policies. Also, don't  you get renewal notices every year. You and your Dad were on the same policy. I am really confused as why it took you so long to realize the duplicity.  It is a good thing you went into the company. Also, $3600 a year for car insurance is extremely high. I am surprised you never thought to get other quotes.

I question everything since I am single. Everyone should watch their finances. I am glad you finally remedied the situation.

Re: I Saved Money On My Car Insurance!

I have been a member of AAA vehicle insurance since I got my very driver's license in 1989.

Even the woman behind the counter was confused as to why I had two insurance.

And yes, with having a newer car, and the top tier coverage, I thought that $300/month was normal.

Plus, as much as I love my state, (Ca) everything is more expensive here.

Stupid, stupid me. I get it. I was a dumb, stupid idiot.

When I would get stuff in the mail from them concerning my policy, it only showed ONE police, and not two.

I did not know that  there was a second one.

I admit that I was a dumb, stupid idiot for not knowing sooner that there was a second policy.
