It's the 24 hour a day weather channel and the meteorologists getting all excited with their doppler radars and computer prediction programs. I feel the same way. I'm in my 50's and we walked to school when it was 0 degrees out. I remember my mother tying a scarf around my face so just my eyes showed, leggings, two pair of socks, earmuffs and a hat. We're becoming a nation of softies.

I know what you're saying and to a degree I agree. But I'm grateful for that 24/7 available weather...think about all the people who work outside or drive for a living and depend on it. It's a whole lot better than years ago when a truck driver was at the mercy of weather and didn't know what was coming so he or she could prepare. There's always a different perspective, isn't there. Now my husband can get the weather whenever he needs it as his schedule is pretty erratic and prepare accordingly. His company depends on that 24/7 weather as well to decide when to issue shutdowns and take their trucks off the road. I appreciate that as a motorist...having a truck jack knife in front of you when he should have been off the road is no fun.

I also consider the people in this country not as well as off as I am. Right here in my community there are families who don't have the proper coats, hats, boots, etc. to be out in the brutal cold. They literally send their children outside in a light jacket with no boots, mittens or hats. It makes me very sad and donating outerwear is on my list of must-do's every year.

I would rather not make a blanket statement that we're becoming a nation of softies. There are some yes, but not where I live or have lived.

Would someone tell me how my commenting on the fact that we get non-stop weather info somehow translates to indifference to the poor??? Geesh! Talk about reading into something!

For those of you too young to remember, we did have weather info back in the 70's and 80's {#emotions_dlg.rolleyes} and truckers didn't drive "not knowing what was coming". And they had their CB radios and other truckers keeping them informed of road conditions. I'm not talking about the 1800's!!! And people who donate clothing (me included) always did so. We don't need 24 hour weather reporting to tell us that some among us are in need.

Now go right back to patting yourselves on the backs and misinterpreting posts.

Relax...I'm not misinterpreting your post nor am I patting myself on the back for anything. I'm not sure why you think that, nor do I know why you think I'm translating this into indifference to anyone. You made a comment that we've become a nation of softies and I explained why I felt differently than you. That's all. No where in my post did I "blast" you for your thoughts nor did I criticize you. I'm sorry you took it that way. You have your opinions and I have mine.

As for truckers and others working outside, I'm not referring to the 70's or 80's, although do you have experience as a trucker in that era? It's not as simple as you state. I'm referring to when we were young, which is what I thought you were talking about.

...or maybe just smarter.

I had to walk to the bus stop in sub zero temperatures when I was a kid. I remember crying because I was so cold. My limbs were near frozen and I remember the pain when they would start to warm up. It's nothing I would ever allow a loved one to do now. It didn't make me stronger. It made me hate winter and cold with a passion. The positive outcome was I got the h#ll out of the midwest as soon as I could! {#emotions_dlg.biggrin}

{#emotions_dlg.thumbup1} I hear ya, azterry! I'd move in a heartbeat if I could find the NYC vibe in a warmer climate...but then it wouldn't be NYC I guess. We'd all start moving and talking slower and it would be Atlanta! {#emotions_dlg.laugh}

Re: I REALLY want to go out...

In Buffalo's Blizzard of '77, almost two dozen people died. They were stranded in their cars or on the street and froze to death. Volunteers found their bodies after they dug down and discovered there were cars under all the snow!

This time, luckily NO ONE died. People were prepared.

Radar is much improved.

I am glad we are more cautious.

Wait! Let me guess. When you were young some of you walked 5 miles each way to school. In 3 feet of snow. In a blizzard. Against the wind. Both ways. Wearing only a light jacket. Carrying 20 pounds of school books.

Did I miss anything?

Yes...they wore bread wrappers on their feet inside their boots to keep their feet dry!
