Re: I Need Some Input On What Is A Fair Rate

To me 8.50 a meal would be a real bargain I think they would have a lot of customers. You say you don't want a lot of leftovers but you want for 2 people meals that feed 2-3. I think at least 15.00 a meal.

I would 'drop by', paying them a 'visit', check out their kitchen. And house, in general. See whether they have clean counters, fridge, etc. How many pets around, etc. Sometimes there are very senior-friendly nearby local restaurants/cafes that might be able to deliver to your parents. It's worth asking around.

About 5 years ago we paid $15 a dinner for my in-laws. This was in the Milwaukee area.

We don't know yet what they want to charge. I think this is a new thing for them as well. Since this is new for us, using an individual, we are just trying to get a ball park

Better to decide ahead of time, the cost and whatever is required, in writing. Don't let them deliver meals for a week or even more, and then send you a 'surprise' bill. Also, as I posted above, pay them an unexpected 'visit' first, before your decision.

Funinthesun, what would be 3 typical meals that your parents would like?

It would cost you a lot here. You're paying for their time, which includes planning, shopping, preparation, travel expenses to deliver, and the cost of the food itself. And for two people, not one.

I don't think you could get that here for less than $30.00 each dinner for two, and that would be nothing fancy.

Good luck, I know how difficult and worrisome it can be when your parents get older and you want the best for them.

Re: I Need Some Input On What Is A Fair Rate

fun.... years back, when my parents were alive, I had a friend get some meals weekly from a local restaurant that my parents loved to dine at.... she picked up take out meals and delivered them to my parents.... that way the restaurant was inspected etc. .... my friend also took a peek at the refrigerator to see how things were looking.... she "just slipped" the meals in the refrig.... I don't remember what we paid her.... but she was happy to be helping and it was a way to keep tabs on my parents....

I jumped ahead here, so, do they plan to prepare their own meals? You could do a couple of casseroles each week, to get a couple of meals out of. Freeze some too. Can they do jello and have a little cool whip on it. They do have sugar free cool whip. Food is really expensive now and you want them to eat healthy and not throw or waste it. Maybe you can set down with them and work out a plan.

Re: I Need Some Input On What Is A Fair Rate

Not sure if this will help but this is what I did with my grandma when she just kinda stopped cooking for herself

I went over on a Saturday, did her shopping for her and then spent the whole day cooking all kinds of stuff.............I had spent a small fortune LOL on Tupperware divided trays with the tops.......you could freeze them and they were microwave safe....I took over my seal a meal too for anything I made that had pasta........I cooked her a weeks worth of meals and froze them in the divided trays............All she had to do was take them from the freezer and plunk them in the microwave..........breakfast, lunch and dinner.

She was getting a good meal and a balanced one......we had a great visit and shared something we both loved, cooking......I got the inside scoop on some of her recipes I so wanted to know..........it was a win, win all the way around....................................raven

A casserole is really a good idea! Personally, I love casseroles and am trying to collect recipes that are healthy. That can also be done with vegetable sides, cook enough for a couple of days.
