Not necessarily true.A single mom making under (roughly) $48,000 can collect up to over $6,000 in EIC she didn't pay in. For a family, I believe that income maximum is somewhere in the mid-$50,000 range.

Gift from the government, as you put it.

@Laura14, this is the second time in my nearly 50 years I have heard of this happening. The other time was about 30 years ago, I was working with a single mother and I don't remember the details, but she was somehow notified from the IRS that she was going to get about twice as much as a refund as she had been expecting.

It was a wonderful and needed surprise for her.

I'm happy for you.

And, my apologies to 151949, I am not at all trying to steal your thunder, I honestly don't know how your post was placed as tho I made it, so sorry! L<3Heart

Dear 151949, for some reason a post you made was placed as if I made it, I don't know what happened, If I did it when I responded to you I certainly didn't mean to turn it around & make it look like I posted it. I am baffled & apologize, certainly not trying to steal your thunder, this is very strange. If I did do this when I responded I sincerely apologize to you. I don't know computers very well, don't know how to fix it, I don't even know how it happened??? leiloni <3 (Wow, as I am typing this your post popped up again, why is this happening? see above & below???

good for you! you'll probably get a official letter in the mail from IRS explaining your new refund amount.  I know that feeling!

About 9 months ago I got a letter from IRS.  I cringed opening it because 4 years ago I got the dreaded IRS letter demanding I owed $18,975🙀😬 in taxes. What?

It was a computer glitch they entered my return (or the person feeding it into the scanning process) anyway, it as a error & confirmed by letter from them. I then could breathe again..lol

So this new letter came telling I put the wrong amount in a certain box & therefore made my taxable income wrong. Six weeks later I got a nice "bonus" check with letter of explanation, of course, I was doing happy dance.  It went towards the windows in my home.

Enjoy your extra ca$h😀

Geez! Louise !  My husband would had hit the floor with a thud and blew a vessel. Already got high blood pressure that would had decked him for sure.

Thank God it was a fluke on their part. They need to hire folks that know what in the **** they're doing. Unforgiveable !

Re: spouse reaction😳😳😳😳

Oh I wish I had a video of that day when he got the dreaded letter.

  Keep in mind, some examples:

I am 2 ft away from him choking & he doesn't notice until I go over to him for help🤨🤨

or

I'll be talking to him right alongside of him he doesn't hear me!  I repeat it again still no answer😱

BUT he got that letter & he was on that phone quicker than a cheetah!

And he ways like a madman on that call, poor Mr. Wills who just happened to take that call.  Funniest part was my husband was demanding it be taken care of immediately & blah blah blah.... yeah right!  Good old IRS agent told him you'll get a correction with zero due in the mail.

I think our mail lady thought he was stalking her😮 because everyday he'd wait for her!  omg, it was the funniest thing ever and dear lord don't let her come 11:39 instead of regular time 11:30 ....

And his stress during this remodel.  All the moths living in his wallet are escaping cuz he doesn't part with his $$$$ too often 💸💸💸💸 .  i think his brain has been replaced with a cash register because everyday he's adding up what I'm spending -- it's just funny ....  lol

And every year without fail there will be someone whining about the government giving EIC to the painfully poor. That is also not a gift from the government - it is a return of money they pay into medicare & SS funds because their income is so low they can't afford to pay it, so the government gives it back.

I would think instead of being jealous that these painfully poor people get this help , you would be very glad you aren't one of them.

@homedecor1     Bless your heart.   That's awful to live and wait thru that kind of horror, it really is.

They have the power to do whatever they want to. Nothing you can do either

Thank God you all can sleep now.  They need to simpify these forms , so, people like my hubbo don't make mistakes.

Next yr. they're not gonna allow the same deductions as this yr. by the way

Bear with me and I am hopefully passing the lucky shamrock along....

I have always submitted an EZ form to the IRS because I own nothing and single people are never ever allowed to claim anything ever as a deduction. It's been against the law my entire life.

So I am pretty straight forward and always get my refund quickly.  It's normally around $700 and this year it was supposed to be around that.  I always do my own and submit and bingo it appears in my bank account.

Well this year, no refund.  I wait and wait and finally stumble across the online "where's my refund" tool and I kept getting the message that the IRS normally refunds 9 out of 10 refunds in 21 days.  Then where is mine?  Laura has some EZ Pay to pay!

I get the message the "IRS is still processing your return."  So I wait.  I just checked the status again not expecting to see anything on a Sunday but there it was.  And I printed it out for proof!

The IRS amended my return and, instead of my $700, they are refunding me over twice that amount and it's coming in a week.  Smiley SurprisedSmiley SurprisedSmiley Very Happy

I am typing this still on the floor with my mouth open.  I have NEVER gotten a refund anywhere near that.  If I knew who checked my return and gave me twice my refund back, I'd send them a Mrs. Prindables basket.

Use the free fillable forms provided by the IRS and e-file it if you can.  Hopefully, they'll double down on you too!

@Laura14  Congrats! The IRS rarely gets complimented, I’m sure.
