Used to catch them when I was a child in CA. I haven't seen any in years. I don't know if they live around here. I'll have to look that up.

Thanks for putting a big smile on my face Marp! It brought back a special memory of this long running contest my father had with my daughter. When she was little, they started a contest of who would see the first lightening bug of the season. It was just a cute silly thing the 2 of them had going for years. Neither DD or I can see a lightening bug now and not think of Dad.

The numbers here have decreased, but we still see them and they can be quite magical to watch in the stillness of the night.

My pleasure Pit. I never got over my childhood joy of lightening bugs.

Funny story. When my husband was still teaching in Florida, we only came back to W.PA for two months in the summer. Our house was very sparsely furnished and we had our bed in the family room (long story). We have screened sliding glass doors in the family room that we kept open for the cool night air. That first night we collapsed into bed with the dogs. A few minutes later we heard low growling. We checked outside and there was nothing to be seen. Lights out, back to bed and more low growling. We finally figured out that the dogs had never seen a lightening bug and they were alarmed by the wee tiny lights outside. It took a few nights for them to decide they were harmless.

Yay! Saw my first firefly last week. What a lovely and welcoming sight!

For me though, it isn't truly spring until you hear the frogs croak. Always happens after the first spring rain, then I know spring is finally here.

I had a Baltimore oriole eating grape jelly on my deck and a hummingbird at my feeder at the same time. Mowed my grass then sat back with a glass of pink lemonade to enjoy my efforts. I love spring!!!

They don't show up here until about June, but I have such fond memories. Since I am living in the family home where my Grandma once was, and we would come back for visits, my daddy would help me catch lightening bugs in a jar and it would be like a lantern... then we would set them free. I always love looking out in the yard when it is pitch black and seeing these little sparks of light, it's like magic fairies flying around. Smile It's finally getting quite warm here, and we are starting to get the storms, so the fireflies come soon after.
