While substance abuse and/or mentally ill persons are in all areas of the country. An incident such as this one does not happen in all areas of the country. Relocating can make a difference.

What area of the country do you live? Answer if you wish, or not. If our County has been infested with "meth addicts", I and haven't seen nor heard about it. But I guess Nebraska, to some, is considered "hick country"!

I started writing a book of a reply and thought better of it. Too many bad memories to relive.
I did want to say though that I lived somewhere before that was a nice middle class neighborhood, very low crime. Until one of the neighbors became addicted to drugs and fell in with a scary crowd.
It took the police almost two years to build their case, and we all suffered during that time. (suffering is not an exaggeration either, many of the neighbors were victims of associated crime...myself included).
Even though the neighborhood returned to normal after the bust, I still moved as soon as I could. I never felt safe there again. When your name is part of criminal case there is always the fear of retaliation down the road. I wasn't the only one that moved.
I do believe that crime/drugs can happen anywhere, and does. Addiction knows no income level or neighborhood boundaries. And where addiction goes, crime generally follows.
Best of luck to the OP.
(ok ok...I ended up writing a mini-book anyway lol...sorry about that)
