I still recommend filing a dispute with Amex. They'll have a lot more influence with Thrifty than you will and will hold the balance due while they investigate. I'm not sure why calling them is so unappealing to the OP. They are the first to say that they are there to help.

I did open a dispute with Amex. They said it will take 6-8 weeks.

And much to my dismay - they do not remove the charge in the meantime.

So I have to see this amount in my balance every time I look - ugh!

hopefully they won't charge interest since it's still showing on your statement

If the charge is removed, the interest will go with it.
