You don't ask someone in the middle of a meal to move on down.

Agree with the OP. He had a lot of nerve.

I would have asked the waiter/waitress behind the counter to 'help me move' the plates, drinks, etc. I'd probably spill everything.

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).

Very good idea, Romary!

I would never ask someone who is eating to move down

He should have asked the server to accomodate his needs, not interupt fellow diners.

Hmmm, I've never had that happen to me either. I think a lot of it would depend on what mood I was in at the time and how he asked. I mean, either way I would move down, but if he asked politely and I was having a good day, it wouldn't bother me at all to move down. If I was already having a rotten day, I'd give him the stink eye, move down, and be mad about it all day.

I'd have said ""sure"" and scooted down so he could sit with his girlfriend. It really doesn't seem like a big deal to slide your things down a foot or two at a casual lunch counter. I like to help out when I can.

It would have been different if he had asked you to vacate a table for them!

Re: How would you feel/react if ..

It was rude of him to even ask. He should have waited for you and the other dinner to offer. While it's a kindness to offer, I wouldn't expect anyone with basic manners to put strangers on the spot by asking to cut in line or move from their seat.
