Thanks, SR :-) I too am not overly concerned what strangers think, so all the "you are just a silly rude person" responses without anything more constructive doesn't faze me. In these forums it's expected, and you know how people can't bear to disappoint ;-)

moonchilde, you asked how YOU would feel/react and people replied how THEY would feel/react. I, for one, did not call you silly or rude. I just answered your question. The danger in asking questions is getting answers that might, or might not, agree with you.

No Cody, you have not been snarky, nor have a few others. And I knew what I was getting into when I posted. In some sense, my OP invited the perfect payback opportunity for a few who have disliked me or my posts elsewhere in the forum. I expected that too :-)

And that is what I meant about a war. I am not aware of most of that and choose not to participate. I hope you don't feel that my difference in opinion was a put down. We just see this particular incident differently. So I will just move on.

No, no worries, I didn't feel that at all from you, Cody.

I would have slid down a seat. No big deal. Because why would this man want to sit separate from his GF with you or that other man in between them?

Because there were no suitable seats available fast enough to suit him. There were literally two dozen restaurants available with a 3-4 block area.

I would never sit at the counter of a busy coffee shop, but if I did I would have moved down, no problem. My husband on the other hand would have never moved and if the guy got loud with him the guy would be looking up at him from the floor.

Heh - believe me, I didn't want to sit at the counter. I'd been waiting 30+ minutes for a booth, felt my blood sugar dropping as I hadn't eaten since early a.m., and saw an empty counter seat, so I grabbed it. I really dislike counter sitting generally but sometimes it can't be helped.

I guess I don't understand why he just didn't wait for two seats to open up together? That would have solved the problem for him, instead of disrupting the other diners.

I would never think of walking up to the counter like that, and asking others to move over for me.

While I would scoot down to make room, it's unlikely I would ask someone else to move over for me though.

The same for me.

Although I always appreciate when people offer to move down if they see that they can make room for my crew.

I have to ask... did that rotten guy at least say thank you?

Re: How would you feel/react if ..

I definitely would've moved. Hubby and I went to a restaurant on Friday night fairly early, and the wait for the two of us was 45 minutes. They told us we could sit at the bar, but there weren't two seats together, and we didn't want to do what the guy in the OP did, so we left. I got to eat at my fave Mediterranean place, so I didn't mind. Smiley Wink But if it were me at the bar, I would have gladly done it. It's ridiculous to waste several spots at a bartop just so there can be a chair between people, IMO.

No, I would not have moved my full meal, drink, water glass, utensils, etc. He had a lot of nerve asking. But of course his needs had to be met over others. As the OP said, if the order hadn't arrived or hadn't even been placed yet, then yes, move to accommodate. Unfortunately, he shamed you and you succumbed. The guy is a selfish, insensitive creep. Could he not see that you had your food already? I'd have said, "Sure, I'll move when I finish my meal."

He did. I think he might have gotten a slight clue that he was clumsy about his request and its timing. So he did thank both of us
