Re: How to receive scrambled (or digital) channels on TV?

@Sue98

Didn't you have a couple threads, either here or over in the Electronics Forum, about buying a new TV set some time back?  Did you ever buy one?

Were you offered a chance, years back when all Analog Signals changed over to all Digital, to get a converter to down convert your incoming signal? Cable and satellite companies in our area offered them to their customers. Were they free? Beats me, I love my satellite programs and ain't about to give 'em up. I have given up many things to keep up with the cost of living expenses, but my entertainment? It's way down my list.

I also have an antenna connected to our 4k tv set and it picks up quite a few digital channels for free. I paid around $20 for it.

It sounds like you have basic cable, i.e. without the set-top box (which unscrambles scrambled channels).  If you have a newer TV and a digital antenna, you can pick up digital channels, mostly those that broadcast over-the-air and their respective sub-channels.  To get a better idea of channels you're likely to get, go to the Mohu Leaf website (digital antenna) and enter your address.  There are several antenna options - the more expensive ones are stronger and able to pick up more channels.

The digital antenna replaces your cable.  It can supplement it but, at least in my case, I'd have to disconnect the antenna and connect the cable when I want to go from one to the other.

@ValuSkr  Thanks for the info on Mohu. We currently use a cable box but I sometimes wonder if there will come a time when the price is too much.  I looked up our area on Mohu and we'd be able to get 88 channels.  So pleased to know this.
