Re: How to get specialized baby formula in a pinch

Early this morning  I was scrolling through Twitter and someone mentioned Amazon. They said to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page and change your location from U.S. to Canada.  You can then have it shipped to your home.  The downside is that we don't want to cause a shortage in Canada either.  My heart goes out to all the new mothers.  Who saw this coming?

Pediatricians are warning mothers not to try and make their own formula. Today Abbott reached an agreement with the FDA so they can open one of their plants....I think it is not the one in Sturgis, Michigan that was shut down due to bacteria. Though they will be opening up a plant to produce formula, they say it will be weeks before it will reach store shelves. It seems like just buying it from Canada would be faster. My SIL lives in MI and her newest grandson is adopted...he uses formula and they have plenty right now....but she said she will drive to Windsor and buy some if necessary.

Re: How to get specialized baby formula in a pinch

The Karo and canned milk, etc used to make baby formula in the past apparently doesn't contain the same ingredients now...some have added preservatives, etc that drs say could be harmful or not contain enough iron, etc. My BIL is a physician and said many pediatrician's offices are usually overflowing with sample packs of formula. I am sure they are using it up as more new moms ask for it.

I also saw that the FDA is going to relax restrictions on baby formula made outside the U.S. to be sold here ....  at least short term to ease the shortage of American made formula.

My daughter in law just delivered this past Saturday and until I told her a couple of weeks ago, she was unaware of the shortage.  She can't breastfeed.  I suggested to her to have my son buy up some Carnation milk and Karo syrup just in case formula can't be found.  As @Snowpuppy, said, why are the doctors not suggesting the old tried and true, not to mention cheaper way to obtain formula.  When I used it for my three kids, I never heard anything about it not being healthy.  Now, all of a sudden it is?

Knowing what we all know now about nutrition, I doubt many women would willingly give their babies Carnation milk and Karo syrup.

Yes, it was different back then.   I recall, back in the day, when I was a kid, pregnant women still drank wine and smoked cigarettes while pregnant.    No one blinked an eye.

Nestle Corp. announced this morning they are importing baby formula from Europe to help with the current shortage. No details were given.

I have been to two different stores last couple days.  I noticed they both had formula, it was behind lock and key but they had it.

No one wants old formula from that plant.  Parents should contact their pediatricians for options.  They shouldn't make their own or use goat milk or add water to formula.

Why would you not make the simple baby formula recipe that's been around for decades, long before the commercial stuff on the shelves.

I remember my grandmother making it. We're all still here.

I don't understand this either.  Unless your baby has to have a certain formula why can't you make it.  Any older woman can tell you how, also I am sure it is on the internet.  Not everymom uses store bought formula, I am sure on facebook there are mom groups that make their own.

I would be nervous about getting fromula from a plant at this point.  Hope your daughter in law listens.  Oh and congratulationsSmiley Happy
