So, to answer the original question, I use self-checkout whenever it's available.  And I bag my own groceries.

I'm not sure what the OP thought happened to the "girl" who refused to bag the groceries for her, as she says she "never saw her again".  Does she think she got the girl fired (unlikely).  Perhaps the girl quit, thinking she could find a better job than dealing with rude customers.

It's amazing to me how many "angry" customers there seem to be in recent years.  And I've never believed that "the customer is always right".  Sometimes the customer is just downright wrong.  And rude.

I use both self checkout and lines with a cashier. It depends on how many groceries I have.

CBS news reported that a New Jersey state senator has reinroduced a bill to go to self service gas stations. There would be both self service and full service available. I don't get why people are opposed to self service gas stations because it's not that big a deal.I guess some people don't like change when they're used to doing things a certain way. It's like a badge of honor to not pump your own gas, which I don't understand.. But then I don't live in New Jersey. .

I remember from my childhood that not only did an attendant pump your gas but cleaned your windows and checked your oil.

Pumping my own gas gives me a feeling of competence. I like self checking out, playing cashier. I'm easily entertained.

I use the self checkout as often as I can. I like packing my purchases how I like it.  It is much quicker for me.  I was in the airport (I cant remember which one) and there is a self checkout for the snack store.  You scan your credit card when you walk in, pick up your purchases and it scans you on the way out and charges your credit card.  Just like that I was in and out in a very short time.  I suspect this "the wave of the future" I am sure I will see more of this set up in other airports soon!

Re: How often do you

My take on this topic is that it's evident many people here have never worked in the service industry or retail.

Anyone who has, understands that the employees on the front lines have no role in policy making, labor hour allotments and no recourse if another employee calls out.

Therefore, feel free to shop where there are no self service checkouts, but please don't do things that waste the employees' time during a stressful rush period, like having them ring up your order and walking out or leaving carts full of food to put back.

High turnover in public facing jobs leads to higher prices in the end.

I have trouble getting them to "help" bag my groceries( I have servere shoulder problems)..I always ask before putting my stuff on the belt..One day the girl say "no"..I let her ring everything up and then told her I didn't want it!..So she had to get a manager..he bagged the stuff for me..Never saw the girl again.

I usually get an annoyed look..I tell them I do not work or get paid from the store to work...

I always try to bag the fragile stuff myself...don't get me wrong...a lot of the cashiers do help bag.

I've used them at Harris Teeter once and also at Lowe's Hardware.....usually if I have a small amount of items.

Some of them don't allow you to get cash back if you are self-bagging.

The Food Lion grocery stores in our area re-did the checkouts, so now there are no long belts and you have to put your cart right next to the cashier.

@Jo1313  Whenever I can I use self check out.  Unlike others I don't think I'm "doing the cashiers job" or that they "should pay me".  I always thought they were put there so those with a few items could get in and out and not have to stand in line behind people with cartloads or that wanted to yak and take their time.  It's easy.

I never understood people who thought it was complicated. I always bag my own groceries,  I'm faster than most of the cashiers.  You're scanning a bar code that's it. I'm not taking jobs away.  The cashiers usually do double duty stocking etc when it's not busy,  I've only had to have the cashier reset the machine I was using once (it was out of register tape).  I taught my husband how to use them and he's a Home Depot pro.
I'm also one of those people who doesn't mind pumping my own gas.  Been through NJ and there have been times when I had to get gas and I was less than impressed.    I've had them overfill and it spilled out, they bang the nozzle around trying to get it in and one time i had to show the guy how to open my gas tank,  I now make sure I have enough gas to just get through NJ lol.  For thise who like it great, I prefer to handle it myself.  And yes I remember the "full service days". I don't find it a hassle or a problem.  😊

I use them for a few items, or if reg registers are packed . Although I dont like to use them when I have tons of produce, in bags that need to be weighed. I have to look up item number and such. Too time consuming. Many items don't have a sku on them.  But they can be handy

@Jo1313 what a spiteful nasty thing to do. You sound like one of those difficult customers.  And since you have shoulder problems & need help bagging you should use the regular checkout.

@Jo1313  -  That is indeed a mean thing to do.  Why would you do that?   Awful.
