No allowance for me and I didn't give my daughter one. She never wanted for anything she NEEDED and she's quite frugal now, moreso than I am, and most around me, including my DH, think I'm pretty frugal.

We never received an allowance, but mama and daddy pretty much bought us what we wanted (within reason of course). We did keep our rooms clean and when we were told to do some sort of chore we did it. We were probably the cleanest kids in the neighborhood. That's just how we were raised.

I never got an allowance. Mom didn't believe in giving me money for things that had to be done as a cohesive family of four unit. Her theory was that, you live here, you help out. And I did. No backtalk either. It was just the way it was. I didn't mind.
But, I didn't miss not having an allowance. I would get plenty of coins from mom and dad if I wanted ice cream or a comic book.
Do parents still give kids an allowance nowadays? I have no idea.

We didn't get an allowance. We had chores to do and we were just expected to do them. Same thing for grades at school. We were expected to do our homework and try our hardest. If we got an A or B, we were told that was great and if we didn't do so good, they talked to us and asked us what was going on and how we could do betteer.

I remember, 1962'ish, I got a quarter per week. It increased as I got older. Culminating in 1972 when I was up to $20 per week. I did a lot for that $20 as my parent both worked. I was required to save 1/2 of my allowance and I could spend 1/2 if I wanted to, but I was more of a saver than a spender.

My folks scrounged around finding nickels so we could get into the swimming pool. We were very poor and swimming was our one treat.
My first babysitting job was $.25 an hour. I remember sitting for 5 kids once and got $.75 an hour. I felt like a queen raking in all that money.
Minimum wage was $1.60 an hour when I got my first real job.

Nothing - if we wanted money, we could do extra chores.
