I am currently wearing a design of my own that incorporates my original diamond (1 ct) and the stones from my diamond band ( five stones that total a bit more than another carat. They are arranged in a bubble design and set in platinum.
That sounds so pretty.

I've never been one to follow trends a great deal....when I got married the 1st time back in the 70's my wedding set was white gold with a round cut diamond while traditional sets were all yellow gold at the time.....this time around I have yellow gold and a marquis cut.
Several of the young girls in our office wear yellow gold wedding rings...not everyone wears white gold/platinum.
I think yellow gold is warmer looking....not all skin tones look good with the white metals and vice versa.

How innovative! On 10/20/2014 SoftRaindrops said:On 10/20/2014 happy housewife said:Old mine cuts have a particular beauty about them...my mom had one. However a GIA certified diamond with excellent specs (modern cut) can be exquisite.OK I guess my husband is just particularly sensitive. Of course my diamond was his Mother's and before that his grandmothers so it has that sentimental value to him as well. He has given me other diamonds over the years - not rings but necklaces and earrings etc - and I have to say , none of them have the sparkle and life to them as this old stone. The quality is not the same with new diamonds anymore.
ITA. It's nonsense that new diamond quality is somehow "less" than vintage. Sounds like sentimentality speaking (not that theres anything wrong with that but it certainly isn't scientific reasoning). And now you can purchase new old mine cuts that are precision cut. Good old Gold has some beauties.
SoftRaindrops, they are cut from the rough into the these antique style of cuts. The diamonds have superb sparkle because they are cut so well.
Here is an August Vintage Cushion cut:
Here is an old mine round:
Oh, they are simply beautiful! Thank you for posting them.

You can buy diamonds with excellent quality, clarity, cut, and size today. When buying any diamond you look at what you want and can afford, and decide which diamond is the right one for you! I go by clarity, color, cut and size--it's a sliding scale so just go for the one that speaks to you!
Top quality stones are expensive and always have been. The top-color diamonds that you don't often see in made-up sets are something to behold. You can spot one when you see it.

Perhaps the husband of your friend thought his wife was bragging and was uncomfortable with the ""flashing"" and nothing more.

My husband picked my loose diamonds out directly from his good friend who is a jeweler, then had them set.
Flawless, unlike the woman who wears them (lol)

The only thing I would add to your post is to always buy a fine diamond with a GIA certificate, where color, clarity, cut and whether the diamond is fluorescent is outlined. Fluorescence in a diamond can impact the color. There are some diamonds that appear yellow in certain lights because of fluorescence, and if the diamond has blue fluorescence it can make the diamond appear to be whiter.

Or maybe with that honking ring on her finger, he'd be expected to pick up the tab for breakfast.
