Re: How many have changed out their wedding set for a new one?

Old mine cuts if you loupe them have a hole in the center which lets light out. That's why the industry adapted a more modern cutting technique allowing light to radiate through all the facets of a diamond.

Re: How many have changed out their wedding set for a new one?

At about the 10 year mark we kept the diamond, a marquise slightly more than 1 carat, and upgraded the 14K yellow gold comfort fit band with platinum and about 2 more carats of diamonds . . . added two smaller marquises on each side and some baguettes and upgraded the 14K to Platinum at the same time . . . had the same jeweler do the work that we purchased the ring from . . . a small family owned jewelry store that did a lot of design work for some of the "movers and shakers" in Texas political families. I kinda sorta wish I had gone with classic round back then but didn't so too late now.

They carefully released only enough rough for current demand, while continually adjusting the degree to which the rough was made available. This caused continually escalating prices, and of course, it increased the perception of rarity.

They may not be all that rare but there are those of us who will always love high quality diamonds and enjoy wearing them.. To each her own..

OK I guess my husband is just particularly sensitive. Of course my diamond was his Mother's and before that his grandmothers so it has that sentimental value to him as well. He has given me other diamonds over the years - not rings but necklaces and earrings etc - and I have to say , none of them have the sparkle and life to them as this old stone. The quality is not the same with new diamonds anymore.

Old mine cuts have a particular beauty about them...my mom had one. However a GIA certified diamond with excellent specs (modern cut) can be exquisite.

ITA. It's nonsense that new diamond quality is somehow "less" than vintage. Sounds like sentimentality speaking (not that theres anything wrong with that but it certainly isn't scientific reasoning). And now you can purchase new old mine cuts that are precision cut. Good old Gold has some beauties.

Hi Gato! Do they re-cut the diamond to have a modern cut? How innovative!

SoftRaindrops, they are cut from the rough into the these antique style of cuts. The diamonds have superb sparkle because they are cut so well.

Here is an August Vintage Cushion cut:

I recently heard on the radio that the bigger the diamond, the more likely a couple is to divorce. And to answer the OP's question-- no I haven't switched out my original wedding set.

I am not sentimental about "stuff." Perhaps I should be, but I'm not. I have reset my diamond and diamond band several times. I am currently wearing a design of my own that incorporates my original diamond (1 ct) and the stones from my diamond band ( five stones that total a bit more than another carat. They are arranged in a bubble design and set in platinum.

Re: How many have changed out their wedding set for a new one?

Oh how pretty, Mom. My solitaires are both the round brilliant cut and they sparkle and shine.

I got a ruby anniversary band (we were married ten years in July) but hardly ever wear it, I probably will but not all the time with the wedding set.

That said, I bought an emerald cut Diamonique one and a half carat solitaire from Jeffrey (don't call me Jeff) Hewson back in the day. It was set in 14K WG and it is lovely, it is the step cut where you can see layers and layers of stone. Very cool.
