How long to get back in shape?

I used to work 45 hours a week and take care of a house, kids, etc AND DANCE, and was in good shape/condition. Now I have a bad back for 10 years after a spine injury (surgery) and havent worked since then.

I havent been able to excercise much at all, since my back injury, because of chronic pain....but kept trying physical therapy, water therapy, and all kinds of stretches etc (you name it) to no avail (due to pain stopping me).

PS I have mentioned this before on here.

Well I FINALLY made up my mind to get an electronic treadmill a little over a month ago. I started doing 5 minutes on it twice a day (doctor ok'd this). I had to take a break of a week though because my back, legs, (and hips) went out...again.... and I had bad pain and could barely walk.

Now I had an epidural shot a week ago, and am back on and up to 8 to 10 minutes twice a day.

Well....I cannot believe how out of shape I am! Ugh! Funny but not so funny! My legs hurt terrible until Im finished (walking semi- fast on a small incline) AND I am somewhat out of breath. When I used to think of all the things I used to do 10 years ago. Well I got upset. But I am NOT giving up!

I wonder how long it will take me to feel OK and not feel so out of shape? Has anyone else experienced getting back on track and how long did it take to feel good again?

My goal isnt so much weight loss (somewhat- could lose a little around the waist) but more so to get my legs strong again (My legs have nerve damage) and if some weight comes off good, that will help my spine too and more the merrrier!
