How long does it take?

My sister's friend has stage 4 breast cancer. She can no longer care for her dog. I've been asked to care for the dog. I am happy to lend a hand, except I am worried it will upset the pet balance at home. I have 2 dogs and 2 cats and they get along great. This dog has not been around cats. How long can it take to know whether the new dog will fit into my pet family?
