Re: How long does a check book last for you?

I haven't had checks for 4 years. In order for my account to be free of charge i have an E only acct. I don't miss the checks at all. Our joint acct has checks so on the rare - very rare occasion I need a check I use one from that acct. We have had that account with checks for 4 years now and have never had to buy any checks yet.

Checks might last me a couple of years.

I use checks for school mostly - all their fees have to be paid with a check or cash.

I might use a check for a doctor/dentist appointment too. I don't use any checks in any retail establishment anymore.

They last me a very long time. I pay all my bills on-line directly on the company's site.

Occasionally there are places I have to right a check like the plumber, doctors, alarm company, lawncare. Some small boutiques I shop at would rather have cash or checks because they don't want to pay the fee for the CC transaction.

Forever, however I do write checks for church offerings and events I support and if I need a record of payment which is easier for me to trace on my bank statement then any other way.

Online bill pay is not exactly free as banks will advertise. You are paying a fee for this service ""elsewhere"". It is still a check processing process. Everyone pays for ""check"" services be it paper or paperless.

Re: How long does a check book last for you?

I have lived here for 10 years I got 4 books of check when I moved in and just had to reorder, so that is 1000 checks in 10 years, 100 checks a year?

I still use checks and I see nothing wrong with it. I would rather do this than worry about doing everything on line. You see constantly in the news about everything being hacked into. How are we supposed to have faith in any of this stuff -- even major corporations are hacked into -- large banks, etc., etc. Even the government has problems with hacking. I don't want to expose myself any more than I have to. I realize its just a game of roulette when you do anything on the computer. I don't have faith in any of the security/virus protection systems. They are all prone to getting getting hacked into.

Re: How long does a check book last for you?

I'm rural so it's taken some businesses longer to allow bill paying online (trash removal, etc). My checks last about a year. Even tho I pay my bills online, I still use a check register. I keep track of my checking balances and when the confirmation # pops up I notate that on my register next to what bill was paid. It also helps when I do my taxes in tracking charitable contributions and medical expenses. A friend told me he prints those and keeps them and I told him, it's easier to keep ONE register than a bunch of pieces of paper.

Last time I was at the bank I asked for check registers, they had to go find them cuz they said no one asks for them anymore so I told them to give me 3 or 4 then!
