What's your problem with "Eastern metro areas"?

New York is a great city. Your loss if you don't take advantage.

I was wondering the same thing, Kitty. I fell in love with Santa Fe and Taos when visiting there, and would go again in a heartbeat. But I feel the same way about my trips to NYC. I know some people aren't crazy about the traffic and congestion, but I loved going to The Cloisters to chill out any time the city seemed too busy or noisy.

I spent the first 18 years of my life live right near Ft. Tryon Park where the Cloisters are. It is a very peaceful place.

Isn't it beautiful there? I found it on my second trip to New York City, mainly because I wanted to see the stained glass, and the description of The Cloisters itself was intriguing.

Re: How interested are you in ""the arts?""

This thread is reminding me of all the wonderful cultural things I was exposed to growing up. My father was a working musician, also a visual artist (photography, oils, watercolors, pen and ink) my mother an ex-opera singer. My grandmother took my brother and I to Leonard Bernstein's young people's concerts with the NY Philharmonic. My family went to Tanglewood every summer to hear my brother (and everyone else) play (he is also a working musician) at the Festival. I was surrounded by my father's musician friends. I played piano, drums, piano and guitar (never excelled at any of them, my brother was the one who inherited the talent. Me, just an appreciation). I took dance lessons, sang and acted in musical theatre in HS and College.

I can't imagine growing up in a home without an appreciation for the Arts.

I became a member of our local Art Museum. I enjoy it.

The tapestries were also gorgeous. That park was wonderful. It was a lovely neighborhood back then. lower to mid inome and very mixed ethnically.

Even if you have an aversion to the East Coast, to Crowds, to whatever- if you ever get a chance, all Americans should go to the Smithsonian at least once in their lives- It is our National Treasure, and worth the "sacrifice" to see- of course DOES take more than one day...

Re: How interested are you in ""the arts?""

I am fond of the opera and of museums, all kinds from historical to artistic. I have a painting BA and really enjoy painting. For any of that, I have to travel from S. FL to other countries or to NYC, where I used to live, twenty minutes across the park to the Met or the Frick. When they were free. That was nice and it's still nice to go back and revisit the NYC museums, admissions and all.

Re: How interested are you in ""the arts?""

I am fortunate to live in NY. I enjoy seeing plays and musicals on Broadway. Attend the ballet at Lincoln Center or the City Center. Love the museums.

When I visit a foreign city whether domestic or international, I do try to scope out their museums. Love the Dali museum in Clearwater, although I haven't seen it since it has been expanded. While in Chicago on business, I always look to see what is showing at The Art Institute of Chicago. I saw the Dead Sea Scrolls (traveling exhibit) and I saw King Tut exhibit at the Field Museum. It did come to NY later and I missed it the first time it was here.

I tried watching the opera twice, and twice I couldn't get into it. So that is a pass for me. I don't really attend concerts but I still go and pay big bucks to see a movie on screen.

Take in a local high school production. You'd be surprised at the talent and quality of shows they put on these days.
