How does the exchange process work

I recently purchased an item that I would like to exchange for a smaller size.

I know how the return process works but, I am curious about shipping costs.

I know with returns you get refunded for the price of an item minus shipping cost.

Does the Q process an exchange the same way as a return and then start from scratch as far as shipping costs.

Am I making sense ? LOL
