@Deanie - Since we don't know any of the facts in this situation, I don't think I'd be jumping to the conclusion that theft was occurring.

You don't know who the people were or their relationship to the member of staff. You said you'd never been there before. Automatically assuming they were stealing is a pretty harsh accusation. (And you even say she knew them by her "conversation and demeanor". So really, you don't know that you witnessed theft.)

You have no idea who they were. They could have been family of the owners. They could have been close friends.

My family own several restaurants. Family doesn't pay when they come in.

Something similar happened at the beauty shop where I get my hair done. A woman walked in, got a shampoo, haircut. and style. Walked out without paying. Several of the patrons were outraged that "this woman" would actually have the nerve to walk out without paying. Turns out the "thief" was the mother of the salon owner and actually worked at the salon and helped clean after hours.

We go to Jason's Deli often. It is an salad buffet but can order off menu too. We love to watch how people steal from the restaurant.

1. Order water but get soda or tea (self serve)

2. Order sandwich but graze on the salad bar items.

3. Get a take out containter for their sandwich but fill it with salad bar items.

4. Our favorite: Get a take out salad container but eat the salad in the restaurant. Then refill the container to actually take out the salad.

We know a lady that always gets free food from restaurants by complaining about her food. Her orders are always modified such as sauce on the side or no onions etc. After she has taken a bite or two she complains and get another dish. She takes it home along with anyting else on the table such as bread or if Mex chips and salsa.

If the customers were truly stealing, that is on them and on the establishment to put in safeguards.

How do you manage to see all that while enjoy that while enjoying your lunch with your lunch partner?

OK, but how does that possibility not cross your mind? Nobody is saying they called the police, but I think it is natural to wonder about what was going on.

That ability to process what is happening around us is there to keep us from harm. When you see something, you assess it. I don't see anything wrong about that.

Isn't it perfectly normal to see that and think "Hmmm. I wonder if they paid for that" or "wonder what is going on there?"
