I measure by: What have they done with what they have been given/gifted in life.

Some people are just clever. Not smart. They get what they want by manipulating.

Other people are not book smart, don't have the best education and began life disadvantaged. What did they do to get where they are?

Some have been given every advantage in life and tossed it all away.

That tells me how 'smart' someone is.

I take into account more than just knowledge.

Knowing facts is not enough, you have to be able (in my book) to communicate with others, not be off-putting or condescending and LISTEN to others.

Can people assess complex ideas, or do they simply "powerpoint" everything to one or two talking points. Real life is challenging, and either/or thinking avoids complexity. If everyone goes this way, we are less able to fix problems.

As to intelligence per se, I agree with Antonio Gramsci (who died in jail, where he had been put by the Fascists in the 1920s). "Everyone is an intellectual, [even though] not everyone has in society the function of an intellectual." He felt that political organizations needed to respect the public's brains and acknowledge that everyone on this planet confronts and solves problems daily.

Anyhow, to me, intelligence is demonstrated by an interest in solving problems. Complaining that somebody else hasn't solved one's problems is very human, but it doesn't provide solutions or even encourage them.
