How do I? Simple, I don't. Ones intelligence means nothing to me. I prefer those that seem to possess a lot of common sense to those that think they possess more intelligence than most around them.

I've had many hockey players in my 52 years of running my league that have degree after degree and initials up the cazoo after their names. But when it comes to common sense. As the old saying goes "they don't have enough common sense to know how to pour p out of a boot while looking a the heel".

Intelligence also comes in many flavors. I prefer the kind that comes from personal living experience as opposed to the kind acquired by book reading or studying about "things and/or people".

I hope this isn't a double post, I wrote it earlier but I don't see it so here goes. My ex husband was very well educated, an electrical engineer, high IQ and a member of the Mensa Society but very little to none of common sense. One day I told him he didn't have common sense and his comment was that he is happy he doesn't have any, he doesn't want to be common. Does that sound intelligent?

Thank goodness no one is judging our intelligence by our posts here....

And to the above poster, my Nana used to always say, "There is nothing 'common' about 'common sense' "

Re: How do you measure someone's intelligence?

The idea that one either has a high IQ or common sense is strange.

Some people are more practical than others and it has nothing to do with their education, I agree. But a lack of education does not guarantee common sense. Having an education does not mean one has no common sense.

And common sense, like everything else, has its limits. Dreamers come up with cures for social ills and sicknesses, they write symphonies and they create cities and nations. Often they do fail, but when they succeed, we see the good done by people who dream.

Walt Disney was a dreamer; everyone with common sense laughed at him. He never went to college but he was still a dreamer. Evidently a difficult person, but he brought joy to so many people.

Intellectual curiosity makes people more interesting and fun, I think, but kindness is the gold standard. I could care less how smart you are if you aren't kind.

That's true!

The way I can tell if someone is intelligent; if they agree with me, then they're intelligent. If they don't, then they aren't! Bwahaha {#emotions_dlg.laugh}

Re: How do you measure someone's intelligence?

Oftentimes, people mistake intelligence with education. While they often go together, they are two entirely different things.

Also, an intelligent person will never tell you how smart they are. They don't need to.

There are a couple of posters here that this applies to. They know exactly who they are.
