As soon as I think they've stopped, they come back. I've been drinking water in hopes that I'd drown them but not so.

First I take a deep breath. Then I drink water slowly, for as long as I can hold that breath comfortably.
Works every time for me.

If they persist after all these measures, see a physician, as they can be an indicator of some serious and some not-so-serious illnesses.

Tjose are good suggestions. I just want to add that I find it curious that I use to get hiccups frequently when I was young. As I think about it now, at 67 I can't remember having them in at least the last 20 years. Strange.

I either have to hold my breath or take small sips of water.
Once I get the hiccups, I will have them on and off all day. Very strange...

My daughter and I get the hiccups often. She used to hiccup in utero, I am here to say that's a really weird experience.
I've tried a lot of odd tricks, including drinking cold water through your teeth while they are clenching a pencil.
The only trick that's ever worked for either of us is to get a full teaspoon of sugar and swallow all of the sugar dry. It's supposed to be about the force of your esophagus trying to get it down that does the trick. Dry, don't flush it down with water or anything.
I hope it works for you.

HEY! I just found this online! It's from Mental Floss, a credible site.
What Causes Hiccups and Why Does Sugar Cure Them?
Swallowing a spoonful of sugar is probably the most commonly prescribed hiccup cure and falls in the first category. A teaspoon of sugar is usually enough to stimulate the vagus nerve and make the body forget all about the hiccups. Even ardent supporters of the sugar cure disagree if the sugar should be taken dry or washed down with water, though.

I learned this sure cure for getting rid of hiccups many years ago. Plug your ears, plug your nose and drink water all at the same time.
It is awkward, but here is how to do it:
Using your thumbs, plug your ears.
Now using your index fingers, plug your nose.
Using your remaining 6 fingers drink a glass of water.
I promise, it works everytime!
