How do I clean a VERY DIRTY microwave?

I got a cute little red microwave for the right price (free), but it is filty. Inside walls & ceiling have very dried on food. The like new (unread?) manual says basically not to use anything harsh or strong, just a sponge & soap & water, no chemicals - well, that doesn't get it clean! HELP!
